Historic Pea Soup Andersen’s Site Slated for Major Redevelopment
On January 1, 2024, Pea Soup Andersen’s abruptly closed, just months shy of its 100th anniversary. The closure followed the property's listing for sale in 2021 and its subsequent purchase in May 2024 for $4.95 million by SBID LLC, associated with developer Ed St. George.
The redevelopment plan envisions a mixed-use building featuring 125 condominium units, commercial spaces, office areas, a gym, and a central courtyard. Notably, there are plans to include a 4,595-square-foot restaurant space that pays homage to the original Andersen's Electric Café, incorporating art deco architectural elements reminiscent of the site's history.
Despite the building's designation as a local historic landmark, this status does not prevent its demolition. The proposed design aims to reflect the site's historical roots while introducing modern amenities to revitalize downtown Buellton.
Community Reaction and Preservation Efforts
The community's response has been a mix of nostalgia and concern. Many locals and longtime patrons express sadness over the loss of a beloved institution that has been integral to Buellton's identity. The sudden closure and impending demolition have sparked discussions about preserving the town's character amid development.
Developer Ed St. George has indicated intentions to retain elements of the original restaurant, including oversized signage and memorabilia, to honor its legacy. However, some community members remain skeptical, given St. George's reputation and previous developments in the region.
As Buellton stands at a crossroads between honoring its past and embracing future development, the fate of Pea Soup Andersen’s serves as a poignant example of the challenges small towns face in balancing heritage with progress.
